Computer Reading Glasses: Why you want a pair

Computer Reading Glasses Guide

In today’s world, we are constantly looking at computer or laptop screens, whether for work or for fun. However, when you look at a computer screen for long periods of time, you start to develop blurred vision, eye strain, and headaches.

This is called Computer Vision Syndrome…

It happens because your eyes are overtasked and unable to hold focus for that length of time. They struggle and strain, but finally gives up…

Enter the computer reading glasses…

They are specifically designed to help you when you look at the computer screen. And because of their unique features, they’re unlike any eye wear that you currently have.

Computer reading glasses focus differently

Let’s talk about where the computer screen is positioned. It’s approximately 20 to 28 inches away from your face, which is considered the “intermediate zone” of vision. This means that it’s closer than seeing street signs while driving, but further away than looking at a text message on your smart phone.

Here are some of the reading glasses you might already own and use…

  • Regular or distance glasses focus only on the “far away” zone of vision, and you still use your eyes’ natural focusing system to read up-close.
  • Reading glasses only focus on near vision, which is approximately 16 – 19 inches away from your face. If they are single vision, you would have to take off your reading glasses to see far away.
  • Non Rx Bifocals have two zones, including no magnification in the distance portion, and up-close magnification strength at the bottom. They don’t focus on the intermediate part of your vision, which is where most computer screens reside.

As you can see, none of these common types of eye glasses are ideal for computer screens. That’s where computer reading glasses come in.

Computer reading glasses have special lenses

Ever look at your computer screen for too long and find yourself squinting because it’s too bright? Then you play with the contrast/brightness button but it’s still uncomfortable?

Computer reading glasses are equipped with special lenses that reduce glare and make it comfortable for your eyes to focus on the screen.

How does it do that?

Well, good computer reading glasses have an anti-reflective coating that greatly reduces the reflections of light that cause the sensation of glare. They greatly enhance your viewing experience on your computer screen, whether you’re working on an important project or streaming videos for long periods of time.

If you want to go a step further, you can also get computer reading glasses that block potentially harmful high energy blue light from your computer screen. Blue light has been in the news because of its association with Macular Degeneration, disruption in sleep, and other harmful effects on your health.

Progressive Computer Reading Glasses

This is probably the most useful type, since it offers different zones of clarity. The top of the lens contains roughly 60% of the magnifying power for the computer since it’s focused on the intermediate distance. The bottom is 100% for near vision, for reading your texts, books, and other reading materials.

That way, one pair of glasses does the job of two separate pairs since the top portion of the lens is focused on the intermediate distance where your computer monitor is and the bottom part is mainly for reading up-close.

The Bottom Line

In this digital age, we are constantly looking at artificially lit screens for very long periods of time.

To keep up with this, you are asking a lot from your eyes. And often, it’s hard for them to keep up with the demand.

Computer reading glasses mitigate that demand by helping your eyes relax. They prevent you from having blurred vision, eye strain, and even neck and back pain (since you won’t be leaning forward to see the screen). All so you can get through your hectic day.
